When Chrissie Miller, Founder of Sophomore NYC, was thinking of a name for her label she stumbled on the meaning of Sophomore, and thought to herself this is the perfect fit. Bet you didn’t know Sophomore means ‘wise fool’. Cheeky isn’t it?
The line is a mix of body con silhouettes that are no muss no fuss. Basic cotton dresses become a must have when carefully cut out triangles appear on the sides or shoulders to show a little skin. For a more modest approach, long sleeve shirts and tanks are embellished with snaps or buttons that fall diagonally on the chest. These can be easily paired with one of the simple skirts with plastic zippers down the front. Sophomore is successful in creating the sportswear we’ve all dreamt about, but haven’t been able to find.
Miller takes her inspiration from 70’s icons like the glamorous Anita Pallenberg and The Rolling Stones to create basics we all have in our wardrobe. Her friends play a big role in the inspiration game for her. Miller started making ironic-vintage inspired t-shirts exclusively for her friends and someone suggested she start selling them to stores…
Close friend Charlotte Ronson put the T’s in her store, and voila, overnight success!
Miller has since teamed up with Madeleine von Froomer—who worked for Proenza Schouler—and the two created a full line equipped with dresses, jackets, t-shirts and tank tops.
Miller’s soft, laid back twists on basics will have you coming back for more.
