Balenciaga’s Towering Shoes

Architecture and fashion are a marriage made it heaven. We have seen it time and time again, Zaha Hadid and Chanel, Frank Gehry and Tiffany’s, the list goes on, and pretty successfully we might add.

So when we spotted Balenciaga’s latest collection of shoes, booties and sandals our eyes smiled and our feet yearned for the sculptural offerings.

Towering footwear dominates Balenciaga 2009 fall accessories collection But, the height of the heels isn’t the only part of the sandals and booties that resemble skyscrapers, these shoes are built.

The platforms are exaggerated thick wedges of rubber that play the lead as the foundation of the shoe.

The Stingray is a strong shoe, with a strong name, and reminds us of a multi-story building edifice. The three-ankle straps fastened with a screw-like buttons give the sandal a grandiose architectural aspect, and add some pretty good height.

Shades of warm biscuit and dense black suede are reminiscent of an urban landscape, making them perfect for stomping around your local financial district or charming your way through a soiree.

Balenciaga also takes us through the zoo with the Knit Jersey Bootie. The turquoise and grey stiletto is dominating and will command the attention of everyone in your path. The take on the python print is hot, hot, hot!

But, if animal print isn’t your thing, check out the Cage Bootie. These babies are made of soft suede and keep the rubber tread them going. The suede is about the only soft element to this fierce bootie. These are not for the weak at heart.

The cascading sashes in oatmeal and coral add a pop of colour and fire to the chocolate brown base of these sultry slippers. The mesh bootie stand on two hefty blocks of rubber and look more like your chic condo building than anything that comes wrapped in a bow. All in all we likey!
