Standard Grill: Penny on the Floor

Many economists project that pennies will soon be obsolete, but the Standard Hotel in New York has found a clever new use for them: flooring in the Standard Grill restaurant. The impressive revamped floor debuted in July, 2009 and well suits the ambiance of the trendy hotel.

The designers behind the Standard Grill are not the first to have the idea of using pennies as tiling‹ as a Paul Smith boutique in Paris also features walls covered in the glimmering currency. The floors are nevertheless artful and of course give new meaning and challenge to the old adage of “if you see a penny pick it up and all year you’ll have good luck”. And the way the American dollar is going… well, we won’t even go there.
