When Elena Kalis set out to capture much-loved fairytale Alice in Wonderland on film, she drew inspiration from the ocean. Spending the lastt 10 years living on an island in the Bahamas has lent this photographer inspiration for the newest addition to her already astounding ‘Underwater’ collection.

The Russian-born artist used her 10-year-old daughter Sacha as the model for the underwater photo shoots, and the result is all at once darling and chilling – much like the Lewis Carroll classic. Kalis describes working underwater as being in “another dimension” to yatzer.com and adds that she is continually inspired by “The ocean… it’s never the same. It’s changing every second, and yet there is something so majestic and permanent about it. I feel very humbled and inspired.”

Kalis’ past collections include “Island Spirit”, a series of photographs from her time in the Bahamas. This stirring collection brings an ethereal sentiment to the foreground by combining natural elements such as flowers and plants with oceanic imagery.
